Work with the general public (families, students grades K-12) for informal education on animals, habitats, local cultures, and conservation for Monterey County. These volunteer programs include:

Events and outreach (available year-round, general public, includes weekend and evening shifts)

Museum Field Trips (available fall-spring, grades K-2, Tues-Fri mornings)

LiMPETS field trips (available fall-spring, grades 6-12, must be willing to commit to 12 shifts or more and be proactive in regular attendance)

Summer camps (available only during summer, grades K-5)

Assist Museum professionals in informal education and field trip programs.

Learn about natural history, conservation, and science communication techniques. Connect to the community to inspire stewardship of the natural world.
Please note that we do not have any remote or behind-the-scenes volunteer programs. All programs take place in-person and involve talking with the general public.
We sometimes, but not always, have specific projects like collections cataloguing or administrative work. If there is a specific project that you would like to pursue and you think is relevant to the goals and mission of the Pacific Grove Museum, please contact our Volunteer Coordinator.

Ability to transport self to and from sites (including the Pacific Grove Museum and locations around Monterey County)

Must be 18 or older

Must be willing to interact with and engage families, students, and visitors
Students will receive individualized training and shadowing opportunities with working with Museum visitors. Students will have access to online material relevant to each community outreach program.
Students will be given an orientation to the Museum and its programs. They will always be accompanied by a Museum Education staff while volunteering. They will be able to call or email their site supervisor (the Volunteer Coordinator) any day of the week for feedback, questions, or for more resources.

Students may be working on off-site events that can be cold or windy.

They may be asked to stack chairs or move tables, carrying equipment that may be up to 25 pounds.

Each volunteer shift can range from 2 - 5 hours. All volunteer shifts are in-person.
Students can fill out a volunteer application at the link below. On the application, note under "Availability" that you are a CSUMB service learning student. Write how many hours you need, and by what end date.
