Opportunity Summary 

College AVID tutors work with small groups of middle students during AVID class to support rigorous academic learning. They facilitate collaborative tutorials by guiding students to clarify points of confusion, model effective questioning, and promote critical thinking. Tutors do not give answers but use inquiry and feedback to help students develop problem-solving skills and academic confidence. They also help maintain an organized, supportive environment, take notes on group progress, and communicate with the AVID teacher to ensure students receive cosnistent support aligned with college-readiness goals.

Opportunity Learning Outcomes 

Strong academic foundation in core subjects. Effective questioning and listening skills to guide tutorials, not give answers. Facilitation skills for small-group, student-centered learning. Knowledge of AVID strategies such as Cornell Notes, study and organization techniques. Interpersonal and cultural-competency skills to build rapport with diverse students. Professionalism and reliability in attendance, communication, and collaboration with teachers. Ability to model college-going behaviors and academic habits. Patience, growth mindset, and encouragement to support critical thinking and student independence.

Opportunity Training 

The AVID teacher/Coordinator will provide training for this position. Yes Mandated Reporter training is required and provided.
