Opportunity Summary

Position Description

The Boys & Girls Club of San Clemente is a nonprofit organization dedicated to ensuring that all young people, especially those who need us most, become productive, caring, and responsible citizens. The internship position is designed to give students hands-on experience working with youth development programs, nonprofit operations, and community engagement. Interns will gain exposure to program coordination, mentorship, administrative support, and communication strategies while applying classroom knowledge in a professional, mission-driven environment.

Tasks

The intern will demonstrate their learning outcomes by engaging in the following activities:

  •      Assisting with the planning, coordination, and delivery of youth programs and activities.
  •      Supporting staff in the supervision and mentorship of Club members during daily programming.
  •      Developing and implementing creative lesson plans, activities, or workshops in areas such as academics, arts, leadership, or healthy lifestyles.
  •      Conducting outreach and communication efforts to support community engagement and program participation.
  •      Participating in team meetings, offering feedback, and contributing to ongoing projects and initiatives.
  •      Shadowing program staff to gain insight into youth development practices, behavioral management strategies, and nonprofit operations.

Training & Supervision

The intern will be supervised by a designated Boys & Girls Club staff member who will provide training, mentorship, and support throughout the internship. Training and supervision will include:

  •      Orientation: An initial session covering the Club’s mission, values, safety procedures, and youth development approach. Orientation also includes instruction on policies, expectations, and behavior management practices.
  •      Job Shadowing: Opportunities to observe experienced staff as they lead youth programs, manage group activities, and engage with families.
  •      Direct Instruction: Step-by-step guidance on program facilitation, youth supervision, and administrative procedures relevant to the intern’s role.
  •      One-on-One Meetings: Weekly check-ins with the supervisor to review progress, provide feedback, and set developmental goals.
  •      Ongoing Feedback: Informal coaching and real-time feedback while supporting programs and interacting with youth.

This structured training ensures interns receive hands-on experience while developing transferable skills in communication, leadership, problem-solving, and nonprofit management; all while directly supporting the Boys & Girls Club mission.

Providing a positive environment where every child can discover their full potential, build lifelong skills, and find a sense of belonging.

Learning Outcome:

By the end of the academic internship, the student will be able to help identify and resolve conflicts, seek out and connect with members, and communicate with staff about day-to-day activities between members.
