Physical Therapy AideAt — Gaspar Doctors of Physical Therapy - Oceanside
The Physical Aide Internship provides students with hands-on experience in a clinical rehabilitation setting under the guidance of licensed physical therapists and staff. Interns will assist with patient mobility, therapeutic exercises, equipment setup, and daily clinic operations, gaining direct exposure to rehabilitation techniques and patient-centered care. This opportunity allows students to observe treatment planning, monitor patient progress, and learn proper documentation and safety practices, including infection control and HIPAA compliance. Participants will develop communication, teamwork, and professional skills while receiving mentorship and feedback throughout the internship. This experience is ideal for students pursuing careers in physical therapy, occupational therapy, kinesiology, or related health fields who wish to build a strong foundation in clinical practice.
By the end of this internship, students will have gained hands-on experience and foundational skills in patient care and rehabilitation. They will be able to assist safely with patient transfers, mobility training, and therapeutic exercises under supervision. Interns will observe evaluations, understand treatment plans, and learn to document patient progress accurately while following infection control and privacy protocols. They will develop effective communication and teamwork skills through interactions with patients, families, and interdisciplinary staff. Students will also gain exposure to clinic operations, including equipment preparation, scheduling, and workflow management. By the end of the internship, participants will have built practical clinical skills, confidence in patient interactions, and a strong foundation for careers in physical therapy, occupational therapy, or related health fields.
Students will receive comprehensive orientation and on-the-job training to ensure they are prepared and confident in their role. Training will begin with an introduction to the clinic environment, safety protocols, infection control procedures, and HIPAA/privacy requirements. Students will be guided step-by-step through safe patient handling techniques, equipment setup, and proper body mechanics before assisting with any patient care. They will shadow licensed physical therapists and staff during the first phase of the internship, gradually progressing to hands-on support as they demonstrate understanding and competency. Interns will also be trained on documentation practices, clinic technology, and communication standards to ensure professional interactions with patients and the care team. Ongoing mentorship, feedback sessions, and opportunities to ask questions will be provided throughout the internship, allowing students to continuously build their skills and confidence.
Safety is a top priority in this internship, and students will be trained before performing any hands-on activities. Instruction will cover proper body mechanics, safe patient transfers, and correct use of equipment to reduce injury risk. Infection control procedures, including hand hygiene and use of personal protective equipment (PPE), will also be taught. Students will learn how to respond to patient distress, falls, and emergencies, and will be supervised at all times during patient care. Reporting hazards or concerns promptly is required to maintain a safe, supportive learning environment.
Students should submit a résumé highlighting relevant coursework, volunteer work, or experience in healthcare, fitness, or customer service. A short cover letter or statement of interest is encouraged to explain career goals and learning objectives. Selected applicants may be invited to an interview, in person or virtually, to discuss goals, schedule, and availability. Students should be prepared to provide references and complete any required health or background screening. Clear communication of expectations will help ensure a successful placement.
