Undergraduate Course Assistant (UCA) Positions – PSYC 101 & PSYC 300

Professor Phuong Nguyen is seeking motivated junior and senior students to serve as Undergraduate Course Assistants (UCAs) for PSYC 101 and PSYC 300 during the Spring 2026 semester. This internship provides an opportunity to gain meaningful experience in student learning support, academic communication, and course facilitation while reinforcing your own understanding of key psychology concepts.

UCAs will assist in tutorials, office hours, and review sessions, help develop supplemental learning materials, and provide constructive feedback on assignments under the supervision of instructors. Additional responsibilities may include grading assistance, classroom organization, and managing course resources. Interns will also have opportunities to build mentorship and leadership skills through guided practice, reflection, and check-ins.

Qualifications:

  • Junior or senior standing who will be enrolled in PSYC 495 in Spring 2026
  • Earned a B or higher in the relevant course (A or higher preferred)
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0; applicants slightly below this threshold may be considered if they demonstrate strong statistical and analytical skills
  • Proficiency in SPSS and confidence in interpreting statistical results, for PSYC 300

Effective written and verbal communication skills, professionalism, and reliability

Students who have previously taken a course with Professor Nguyen are strongly encouraged to apply; however, all qualified candidates will be considered.

Tasks:

1. The intern will demonstrate their facilitation skills by holding weekly office hours and conducting review sessions prior to exams.
2. The intern will demonstrate their instructional development by creating tutorial materials and contributing to practice exams.
3. The intern will demonstrate their feedback skills by assisting with grading homework and exams (with instructor supervision).
4. The intern will demonstrate their administrative abilities by helping with classroom logistics during class meetings and organizing/distributing course materials.
5. The intern will demonstrate their professional communication by leading some class discussions (with the instructor present) and responding to student inquiries.

Training:

1. To help the intern achieve effective facilitation, I will provide mentorship on tutoring techniques, observe their initial sessions, and offer feedback on their approach.
2. To help the intern develop instructional materials, I will review drafts of their tutorial content, provide guidelines on creating practice exams, and collaborate on handout creation.
3. To help the intern provide constructive feedback, I will share rubrics, model effective grading practices, and review their comments before returning assignments to students.
4. To help the intern manage administrative tasks, I will train them on record-keeping systems and provide orientation to classroom technologies and procedures.
5. To help the intern develop professional communication, I will model appropriate instructor-student interactions and provide feedback on their written and verbal communication.

Learning Outcome:

1. By the end of the internship, the student will be able to facilitate student learning through tutorials and review sessions effectively.
2. By the end of the internship, the student will be able to develop instructional materials that supplement course content.
3. By the end of the internship, the student will be able to provide constructive feedback on student assignments.
4. By the end of the internship, the student will be able to manage classroom administrative tasks efficiently.
5. By the end of the internship, the student will be able to demonstrate professional communication in an academic setting.
