Opportunity Summary 

The Police Intern provides support to various units within the Police Department while gaining exposure to law enforcement operations, administrative processes, and community engagement and health. This role is designed for students or early-career individuals interested in exploring a future in policing or criminal justice.

Tasks:

Assist with administrative tasks, including data entry, filing, report preparation, and record organization.

Support community outreach programs, such as public events, safety fairs, and youth initiatives.

Observe and learn from patrol operations, investigations, traffic safety, and specialized units (based on department guidelines).

Help maintain and prepare equipment, vehicles, and training materials.

Assist staff with research projects, crime analysis, or special assignments.

Provide customer service at front counters, helping with information requests when appropriate.

Participate in training sessions and briefings to gain insight into department procedures and responsibilities.

Uphold confidentiality and follow department policies, regulations, and professional standards.

Training:

Orientation & Onboarding

Welcome briefing and introduction to department leadership

Overview of mission, vision, and values

Tour of facilities: patrol, records, dispatch, detective bureau, training room, evidence

Issue internship materials (ID badge, schedule, handbook, confidentiality forms)

Training on professional expectations, confidentiality, and workplace conduct

Policies, Ethics & Legal Standards

Code of conduct and ethics in law enforcement

Confidentiality and handling sensitive information

Department policies

Cultural awareness and community policing philosophy

Safety & Procedures

Personal safety awareness, situational observation

Emergency procedures

Radio etiquette and communication protocols

Basic first aid overview

Administrative Skill Training

Records management systems (observation/limited access depending on policy)

Report organization, filing, data entry

Customer service training for front desk or lobby assistance

How to handle public inquiries professionally

Introduction to evidence handling rules

Participate in outreach events, safety fairs, school programs

Training on public communication and engagement

Report writing basics

Learning how to complete logs, forms, and daily activity summaries

Ongoing Evaluation & Mentorship

Regular check-ins with a supervisor or field training officer (FTO-style)
