A period of service in a professional field to gain supervised practical experience. The following articles identify the objectives and identify the responsibilities of the participants in the internship, and activities, which if included in the intern’s work experience, should enhance the value derived from the work experience for both the intern and the sponsor who has completed an internship.
Project Management
- Assisting project managers and superintendents at as high a responsibilities level as practical.
- Coordinating subcontractor activities, verifying work and recommending progress payments, inspecting.
- Planning & scheduling, process extra work orders, prepare requests for progress payment
- Obtaining permits and licenses, checking zoning and code requirements, designing temporary facilities.
- Arranging for utility services, conducting safety inspections and training, supervising punch list activities.
- Verifying work hours, materials used and other elements necessary for updating database
- Preparing briefing charts and formal reports
- Inertact with owners during weekly OAC meetings
- Assiting project managers in meeting their deadlines and updating project deliverables
- Coordinating with city and special inspectors
Tasks:
Field Operation
\u25cf Working as a helper, clerk or technician assistant, etc.
\u25cf Assisting with surveying, testing, sample collection, drawings correction and filing, check material deliveries.
\u25cf Assisting with time keeping and cost control, inventory control, schedule checking, subcontractor monitoring.
\u25cf Assisting with report preparation, safety inspection, submittal logging and processing.
\u25cf Observing and recording minutes of meetings, conducting site tours for visitors.
\u25cf Perfroming pre inspections prior to city and fire marshall walking the building for progress and final inspections
\u25cf Reviewing construction documents and drawings
Office Operations
\u25cf Preparing quantity take-offs, calling vendors and subcontractors for proposals.
\u25cf Checking drawings and specifications for completeness, discrepancies, etc.
\u25cf Attending bid openings, conferences, etc., taking notes, making records, completing forms.
\u25cf Assisting with project record keeping, preparing shop drawings, assisting with cost control records.
\u25cf Assisting in the preparation of markups, submittals, RFI's, and spreadsheets
\u25cf Drafting change order requests as needed for owner and subcontractor changes in scope

Training:
Intern will be assigned to a supervisor and will be guided day to day with various project management tasks such as quality control, attending meeting with subcontractors, preparing documents for the owners and design team, walking the project to review schedule and safety.
Learning Outcome:
1. To familiarize the intern with the construction industry and the facility acquisition process of planning, design, and field operations.
2. To introduce intern to the complex inter-relationships which exist between the various tasks and participants in a constructed project.
3. To expose intern to the numerous management functions which must be performed within a construction organization.
4. To aid the intern in acquiring specific job skills which will enhance their value to their employer and the industry.
5. To help the intern gain practical experiance with project management and scheduling
6. Enhance problem solving and decision making skills
