Marketing InternAt — UC Irvine Student Housing
Tasks include but are not limited to creating content via Adobe CC and CapCut, creating and distributing content for posting to social media for community-wide events, and department wide campaigns (i.e. Facebook, Instagram, etc.).
Learn and utilize analytics to strategically produce engaging content.
Provide administrative support for professional staff on an ad hoc basis.
Assists with social media accounts and content creation (creating posts, posting to accounts, responding to comments, and direct messages, etc.)
Based on specific assignments, will interact with students and professional staff (e.g. at photoshoots/ community programs).
Training:
The student will receive a two week orientation covering the following:
- Week 1: General employer orientation for UC Irvine, which includes workplace trainings that are mandatory by the university. Student will learn about their rights in the workplace, how they will work with their colleagues within the Student Housing marketing team, and set up a schedule that best works for them and the team.
- Week 2: Student will receive trainings on basic marketing concepts (SWOT analysis, target audience acquisition, segmentation, etc.), and how to best implement them. They will be shown case studies done from the team already as a framework, as well as examples from other universities. This is through provision of work samples and reviews.
Throughout the internship, the student will receive trainings on how to use the following softwares (Google Analytics, Sprout Social, Asana, Mailchimp) by utilizing each software's own training, and then learning how our team uses each one individually. This will be done during skills training with individual members of the team and job shadowing.
Through literature reviews and research, the student will learn how to effectively create content for different audiences and social networks. Once the student has an understanding of the nuances of content creation, they will shadow members from team to learn the process from start to finish.
Student will be trained on how to use professional filming equipment through skills training and shadowing.
Through one-on-one mentor meetings, the student will be tasked with creating and implementing one marketing campaign from start to finish, which will last the duration of the internship. They will utilize their weekly trainings and implement them each week until they are able to independently run said campaign. Each week during these meetings, they will be tested on their knowledge prior to the implementation of the topics they have learned.
Learning Outcome:
By the end of the academic internship, the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate skills in content creation and social media. This includes video storyboarding, filming, and editing. The student will also be able to understand social network algorithms to better market to target audiences.
- Demonstrate knowledge of data analytics and metrics using industry standard tools (Google Analytics, Sprout Social, Mailchimp) to best reach target audiences.
- Independently film and/or photograph subjects, events, and videos using professional filming equipment in a controlled setting.
