Opportunity Summary 

The Electrical Apprentice / Installer supports licensed electricians in the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical systems, with a primary focus on lighting installation, controls, and general electrical work. This role is hands-on and field-based, ideal for someone looking to build a long-term career in the electrical trade while gaining real installation experience.

Student Duties:

  1. Assist with the installation of commercial and institutional lighting systems, including mounting fixtures, making electrical connections, and verifying proper operation.
  2. Install conduit systems (EMT, PVC, and flexible conduit), including measuring, cutting, bending, and securing conduit under supervision.
  3. Pull, label, and terminate electrical conductors according to plans and code requirements.
  4. Assist with installing electrical devices such as switches, receptacles, occupancy sensors, and lighting controls.
  5. Read and follow electrical drawings, lighting layouts, and written instructions to complete assigned tasks accurately.
  6. Use hand tools and power tools safely and correctly for electrical installation work.
  7. Perform basic testing and troubleshooting of lighting and devices to confirm proper function.
  8. Organize materials, maintain tools, and assist with material staging to support efficient jobsite operations.

Training:

The student will begin with a basic orientation covering company expectations, jobsite safety, and general electrical work. The student will work alongside experienced electricians, first observing and then assisting with lighting, conduit, and device installation under supervision. Tasks will be explained before work begins so the student understands what is being done and why. Ongoing guidance, safety reminders, and regular feedback will be provided throughout the placement to help the student build skills and confidence on the job.

Learning Outcomes:

  1. By the end of the academic internship, the student will be able to safely assist with the installation of electrical systems, including lighting fixtures, conduit, and basic wiring, in compliance with NEC and jobsite safety standards.
  2. The student will be able to identify common electrical materials, tools, and equipment used in commercial and residential installations and explain their proper use.
  3. The student will be able to read and interpret basic electrical drawings and lighting layouts to support installation activities.
