RAGE Restful Leadership & Community-Based Social Justice PracticumAt — The Race and Gender Equity (RAGE) Project

Opportunity Summary 

Students will engage in community-centered practice grounded in our four pillars of healing, education, advocacy, and research. This practicum immerses students in RAGE’s holistic approach to supporting youth ages 13-26, and the adults that serve them, through helping maintain restorative rest spaces; co-leading community and youth-engaged research; program planning; coaching & case management; and interactive trainings. Students will learn Restful Leadership principles & coaching fundamentals, explore concepts such as sleep equity and wellness at work, and support the rhythms of our youth co-working and healing space. Through hands-on activities, reflective supervision, and participation in workshops and trainings, students will experience how culturally rooted, justice-driven practice comes alive in a nonprofit setting.

Opportunity Learning Outcomes 

- How to apply trauma-informed, healing-centered approaches when working with Black youth and families. - Practical skills including coaching & case management, facilitating groups, circles, and holding supportive conversations. - How to integrate Restful Leadership practices into their own work habits and community engagement. - Strategies for community-driven program design rooted in equity, justice, and collective care. - How to participate in and support Youth Participatory Action Research (YPAR) processes and engage in systems change. - Foundational administrative, communication, and project management skills relevant to nonprofit social work practice.

Opportunity Training 

Students will receive onboarding in Restful Leadership, RAGE’s organizational framework, and the basics of trauma-informed and healing-centered engagement with youth. Training will include an introduction to social justice youth development, how our rest and wellness spaces operate, and the role of youth-led research in our programs. Students will shadow staff, practice simple facilitation and support tasks with guidance, and participate in weekly reflective supervision. They will also have access to readings, tools, and restorative practices used across the organization. Youth safety, boundaries, mandated reporting, confidentiality, and documentation expectations will be clearly explained and supported throughout the placement. Students will also receive introduction to Restful Leadership coaching training in preparation for CA Wellness coaches or other coaching certification.

Additional risk specific to this opportunity 

Students will be oriented to our crisis response protocols, boundaries for youth engagement, and procedures for navigating challenging situations. Staff are always available for consultation, and no student will be asked to manage crises alone. RAGE space is an upstairs office. Physical accomodations can be arranged in advance.
