Health, Safety, & Environmental (HSE) InternAt — PCL Construction, Inc.
The HSE Intern position consist of assistance with developing, implementing, and monitoring project-specific HSE plans with guidance of an HSE professional and the project team. In addition, they will monitor field activity compliance with safety policies and procedures. Field inspections, safety meetings, and site walks will be implemented to help with the learning experience.
Tasks:
1. Conduct HSE field inspections.
2. Attend and assist Weekly HSE field meetings.
3. Assist in correcting field hazards discovered in on the project.
4. Assist in the incident investigation process and report in the event an incident was to occur.
5. Assist and attend weekly/monthly safety meetings with the jobsite and HSE team members.
6. Learn and utilize the safety management system (Hammer Tech).
Training:
The student will go through the HSE orientations to learn and understand the roles and responsibilities of a HSE professional, as well as numerous safety related trainings to learn about construction safety. Trainings such as fall protection, confined space safety, trench and excavation safety etc. will be taught on a day-to-day basis. Trainings on how to successfully conduct an incident investigation report will also be delivered to have a better understanding on what consist of the investigation process. Best practices on how to properly conduct a safety orientation, field meeting, safety toolbox talks will be taught in addition to the learning/training process.
Learning Outcome:
By the end of the academic internship, the student will be able successfully conduct a jobsite field inspection and have the ability to identify safety related hazards and concerns. In addition the student will have a good understanding of how to perform incident investigations, execute safety field meetings, and have the ability to strengthen their construction smarts as a HSE professional.
