Opportunity Summary 

Position Summary: The Volunteer & Development Intern will support the Volunteer Services and Development teams by assisting with volunteer engagement, donor stewardship, prospect research, and event/campaign coordination. This role offers hands-on experience in nonprofit operations, volunteer management, fundraising systems, and community partnership development within a human services environment.

QUALIFICATIONS (Education/Experience/Skills/Working Environment/Certifications)-

Education:

  • Currently enrolled in or recently completed coursework toward an associate’s or bachelor’s degree in Human Services, Social Work, Nonprofit Management, Business Administration, Communications, Public Health, or a related field

  • Eligible for academic credit, if required by the student’s academic program

Skills/Experience:

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail

  • Clear written and verbal communication skills

  • Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office and/or Google Workspace

  • Comfort working with databases or willingness to learn CRM systems (e.g., Bloomerang)

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment

  • Interest in volunteer engagement, fundraising, and community-based work

  • Prior volunteer or nonprofit experience is a plus but not required

Working Environment:

  • Primarily remote or hybrid, depending on organizational needs

  • May include occasional in-person support at Resource Centers or community events

  • Professional, collaborative, and mission-driven team environment

  • Flexible scheduling to accommodate academic commitments

  • Successful completion of background check

Tasks;

Volunteer Engagement Support

Assist with managing and updating public volunteer opportunities and volunteer intake listings

Support volunteer onboarding, including packet review and background check coordination

Route volunteers to appropriate Resource Center sites and staff

Serve as a first point of contact for general volunteer inquiries

Development & Fundraising Support

Assist with processing donor thank-you letters and year-end tax receipts

Support CRM (Bloomerang) data entry, updates, and record maintenance

Prospecting & Research

Conduct first-pass research to support funding, corporate partnership, and internship outreach

Assist with building and maintaining prospect lists for corporate partners, event sponsors, and target regions

Compile contact information and brief prospect summaries for team review

Event & Campaign Support

Track sponsor commitments and benefit changes

Support event and campaign timelines, documentation, and follow-up

Training:

This 12–15 week internship includes structured opportunities for training and skill development, beginning with orientation on the organization’s mission, programs, confidentiality, and volunteer services processes. The intern will receive hands-on training in volunteer engagement and onboarding, CRM data entry and donor stewardship practices, and first-pass research for funding and partnership outreach. As the term progresses, the intern will be trained to support event and campaign coordination, take on increasing responsibility with guidance, and participate in team meetings and supervision check-ins. The experience concludes with reflection, feedback, and a review of learning outcomes to reinforce professional growth and readiness for future human services or nonprofit roles.

Learning Outcome

Develop practical experience in volunteer engagement and coordination within a community-based human services organization

Gain an understanding of how nonprofit programs and resource centers operate, including cross-functional collaboration between programs, volunteer services, and development

Build skills in professional communication, including responding to volunteer and community inquiries with empathy and clarity

Learn how fundraising and donor stewardship support the sustainability of human services programs

Strengthen research and assessment skills by conducting outreach and prospect research to support community partnerships and service expansion

Apply ethical standards, confidentiality, and professionalism when working with sensitive information and diverse populations

Enhance organizational, time management, and data management skills relevant to case coordination and nonprofit service delivery
