Opportunity Summary

The San Diego LGBT Community Center is a leading LGBTQ+ advocacy organization in the San Diego region. As the LGBTQ+ community continues to face direct attacks from the federal government, it's important for us to understand how to build LGBTQ+ power, organize community members around issues impacting LGBTQ+ people, and engage in advocacy at local levels of government. This service learning opportunity with The Center's Advocacy & Civic Engagement team will focus on The Center's policy priorities, responding to anti-LGBTQ+ threats from the federal government, and fostering a better of understanding of how San Diegans can engage with our City Council and Board of Supervisors to create meaningful change. Service learning opportunities outside of the Advocacy & Civic Engagement team, like participating in The Center's food banks and annual Dining Out for Life event, will also be available.

Opportunity Learning Outcomes

By the end of this opportunity, students will have learned... - the scope of ongoing federal threats against the LGBTQ+ community and how The Center is responding - what The Center's policy priorities are and how they shape our work in this current moment - more information about the San Diego City Council, how to read and understand City Council agendas, and how to deliver public comment at City Council meetings - more information about the San Diego County Board of Supervisors, how to read and understand Board of Supervisors agendas, and how to deliver public comment at Board of Supervisors meetings - information about The Center's full scope of programs and services, including opportunities for volunteer engagement in events and programming - information about upcoming civic engagement opportunities with The Center, including voter mobilization campaigns for this year's June primary and November midterm elections
