Opportunity Summary 

The Human Services Intern supports students by assisting with front\u2011line services, resource navigation, and campus program activities. This role provides direct hands\u2011on experience in student services, case management support, event operations, and cross\u2011department collaboration. The intern will learn how to effectively assist diverse student populations while gaining practical experience in communication, community resources, and professional service delivery.

Tasks:

The intern will demonstrate their learning outcomes by
1 – providing information to students and individuals interested in services provided by LBCC
2- Assist in the set-up of events and distribution of supplies for students enrolled in programs (may include daily food distribution and monthly distribution with the LA Regional Foodbank’s Mobile Food Pantry)
3- Assisting students with the CalFresh application process or finding other needed external resources
4- assisting other programs with events and activities for students such as CalWORKS, DSPS, or TRIO.

Training:

The intern will receive structured, hands\u2011on training alongside current staff to gain a thorough understanding of department programs and service processes. Training may include shadowing staff, participating in group or individual meetings, and observing student interactions. The intern will also meet weekly with their supervisor to review progress, receive feedback, and obtain ongoing support and mentorship. As needed, additional meetings or training opportunities with other departments may be arranged to strengthen cross\u2011departmental knowledge and collaboration.

Demonstrate effective interpersonal communication skills by clearly explaining available services
Apply active listening techniques to identify the needs or concerns of students
Apply principles of ethical service delivery by ensuring fair, nonjudgmental distribution of supplies to all participants
Demonstrate organizational and teamwork skills by collaborating with staff and volunteers to coordinate event logistics
Practice confidentiality standards required when handling personal information
Develop case-management skills, including assessing needs, identifying barriers and linking students to support
Develop awareness of specialized student populations including students with disabilities, first-generation students, parent students, or students experience insecurities.
Enhance understanding of wrap-around services and how to integrate programs for student support, success, and well-being.
