Opportunity Summary

This internship as a Teaching Assistant (TA) for an Aging Studies or Psychology course is designed to provide structured experience in university‑level teaching and course support. The intern will assist the instructor with day‑to‑day instructional tasks for an online or in‑person, lecture‑based course. Primary responsibilities include helping manage the course learning platform, supporting communication with students, and assisting with grading and feedback under the instructor’s supervision. The intern will also hold limited office hours or Q&A sessions, monitor and encourage student participation, and help ensure that course policies and expectations are clearly understood and followed. Overall, this position offers the intern practical, mentored experience in teaching, assessment, and student support in a higher‑education setting.

Learning Outcomes

1. Provide course support by managing core course tasks (e.g., posting materials, updating grades, tracking participation) accurately and on time within the learning management system.
2. To communicate clearly and professionally with students in writing (email, LMS messages, discussion boards) to answer routine questions and reinforce course expectations.
3. Provide assessment and feedback by applying and creating rubrics to grade selected assignments or quizzes and provide constructive feedback that supports student learning.
4. To facilitate student learning by holding office hours or Q&A sessions, guiding students’ questions back to key concepts from lectures and readings.
5. To reflect on their own growth and development in academia.

Training

1. Provide an initial orientation to course policies, LMS use, grading rubrics, and communication norms, then have the student shadow the instructor in class sessions and online interactions to see expectations modeled.
2. Hold brief weekly check‑ins to review upcoming tasks, co‑develop grading approaches, discuss student issues, and answer questions, gradually increasing the TA’s responsibility as competence grows.
3. Give the student specific, limited tasks (e.g., grading a small batch of quizzes, drafting announcements, moderating a discussion) and then review the work together, providing targeted feedback to improve clarity, fairness, and tone.
4. Invite the student to run short review segments, host Q&A/office hours, or facilitate an online discussion thread, followed by debriefs focused on what went well and what to adjust next time.
5. Ask the student to complete brief reflective notes during the term (e.g., after grading or leading a session) and will use these reflections in meetings to help the student identify strengths, growth areas, and next steps in their teaching development.

Tasks/Duties

1. Assisting with posting weekly course materials, announcements, and updates to the learning management system and verifying that information is accurate and on time.
2. Recording and updating student grades and participation according to the instructor’s directions, checking for completeness and consistency.
3. Responding to routine student questions via email or discussion boards using clear, professional language that reinforces course policies and expectations.
4. Applying instructor‑provided rubrics to grade a sample set of quizzes, short assignments, or discussion posts, then revising their work based on supervisor feedback.
5. Holding scheduled office hours or Q&A sessions (online or in person) to help students clarify instructions and connect questions back to course concepts.
6. Facilitating or co‑facilitating at least one discussion or brief review session and reflecting on what supported student engagement and understanding.
7. Keeping a short reflective log during the term that notes challenges, strategies used, and areas of growth in communication, organization, and facilitation.
