Opportunity Summary 

During this internship, students are expected to be professional in behavior and attitude, learn how to interact with children in a classroom, assist with small group or whole group activities, use positive guidance strategies modeled by the mento teacher, and observe and reflect on the children and themselves. 

Tasks:

Observation of mentor teacher, open to feedback and asks questions, communicates respectfully with teachers, aides, and families.
Nuilds warm, positive relationships with children, uses developmentally appropriate language and expectations, helps with routines.
Assist and gradually plans and leads circle time, adapts activities for different developmental levels.
Uses positive guidance strategies modeled by mentor teacher, learns how to direct behavior rather than punish, understands basic safety and supervision, and knows when to ask for help with challenging behaviors.
Takes notes on children, teaching strategies, and routines; connects classroom practice to what they're learning in coursework.

Training:

Mandatory weekly meetings with site supervisor (30 minutes-1 hour). The first few weeks will be useful for observation and adapting to the new classroom environment. Then progressively taking on more responsibilities, as necessary, for the course and the teachers personal goals for their semester. such as, leading a group time (small or large), assist in resolving conflict between students, plan and facilitate learning centers, help with routines through the day: clean up, meals, rest time, transitions; support social emotional skills in students, and taking notes on children, teaching strategies and routines.

Learning Outcome:

comfortably interact with students and staff in a warm and positive way.
perform useful classroom management skills that have been modeled through the semester.
learn to plan and lead activities withing the classroom(small group and large group)
observe and reflect on student behaviors, self (reflecting what went well and didn't go well), and classroom learning objectives.
learn, assist and gradually take on more responsibility as the semester progresses.
