Education Specialist InternAt — Fullerton Museum Center

Opportunity Summary 

The Education Specialist Intern will join the Fullerton Museum Center team and gain valuable, real-world experience in creating and implementing educational programs, leading tours, and working with docents and volunteers within a cultural institution. This unpaid internship is offered for the duration of the academic semester and is open to currently enrolled college students or recent graduates, whether or not academic credit is required.

Tasks:

Assist in marketing, booking, and managing group tours for schools and community organizations

Lead exhibition tours for the public, schools, and private groups

Collaborate with contracted teachers, artists, and guest presenters

Develop hands-on educational programs for in-house, outreach, and classroom experiences

Create exhibition tours that are engaging, inclusive, and educational

Train and support docents to maintain a high standard of tour delivery

Prepare informational materials, including staff and docent guides, talking points, and context notes for exhibitions

Work with staff at educational outreach events to ensure program content is delivered effectively

Support public programming and community engagement initiatives aligned with Fullerton Museum Center’s mission

Assist in the development of educational programs and events that attract sponsors, grants, donors, and ticket sales

Organize and maintain classroom spaces, pop-up programs, and outreach materials, including art and craft supplies

Communicate program needs and updates to staff and volunteers to ensure smooth execution

Be available to work some evenings, weekends, and holidays as required

Perform other duties as assigned

Training:

Exhibition & Content Training

Curatorial walkthroughs of current exhibitions

Artist talks or curator briefings to deepen content knowledge

Research methods for developing interpretive materials

Curriculum & Program Development Workshops

Lesson planning aligned with state education standards

Writing learning objectives using VTS model

Developing inquiry-based and hands-on learning activities

Creating inclusive and accessible programming for diverse audiences

Tour Facilitation

Shadowing experienced educators and docents

Practice tours with staff feedback

Strategies for engaging K–12 students vs. adult audiences

Classroom management techniques for group tours

Learning Outcome:

Design and Deliver Inclusive Museum Education Programs
Interns will develop and implement engaging, standards-aligned educational programs and exhibition tours for diverse audiences, strengthening their skills in curriculum development, interpretation, and public facilitation within a museum setting.

Develop Leadership and Volunteer Management Skills
Interns will gain practical experience training and supporting docents and volunteers, enhancing their abilities in mentorship, communication, and collaborative team leadership.

Understand Museum Education Operations and Community Engagement
Interns will acquire a comprehensive understanding of how museum education departments function, including program planning, outreach coordination, marketing support, event execution, and strategies for building community partnerships and audience engagement.
