Opportunity Summary 

This internship provides hands-on experience in the field of drug and alcohol treatment within a nonprofit clinical setting. Interns will gain exposure to working with a diverse and high-acuity client population, including individuals involved in the criminal justice system (parole and probation) and those with complex medical needs, including immunocompromised conditions. Our organization is a nonprofit drug and alcohol treatment center located in Vista, California.

Opportunity Learning Outcomes 

Students will have the opportunity to develop clinical skills by working with clients in both individual and group settings. Interns will learn proper clinical documentation practices, assist with client activities, and support the daily operations of a drug and alcohol treatment center. Our program provides a full continuum of care, including detoxification services, residential treatment, outpatient treatment, and sober living. We are a 12-step–based recovery program.

Opportunity Training 

All interns are required to complete mandatory training, including CPR/First Aid certification (valid for two years; approximately $14.99), sexual harassment prevention (1 hour), confidentiality (1 hour), HIPAA compliance (1 hour), motivational interviewing (1 hour), emergency procedures, Voter Act, Hatch Act, and False Claims Act training (1 hour), Choices in Recovery orientation, and MAT, Narcan, detoxification, and urinalysis (UA) procedures (1 hour). All required training is provided in-house.

POPULATION SERVED: Students may be working with minors, elderly, behaviorally challenged populations or individuals who have a known criminal background or history of violent behavior.

Our client population primarily consists of individuals impacted by the criminal justice system. We collaborate with California State Parole, San Diego County Probation, and the County of San Diego’s Intensive Case Management (ICM) program funded through NAMI. Interns may participate in client interactions as part of their training experience, all of which are conducted under direct supervision to ensure clinical appropriateness, safety, and professional development.
