Opportunity Summary 

This internship will assist and offer hands-on preservation research, program development, and digital storytelling to help Brea residents pursue designation on the Historic Registry and approval for Mills Act contracts for their homes.

Tasks:

• Become familiar with historic designation in the City of Brea
• Become familiar with the National Register of Historic Places
• Become familiar with the Mills Act
• Draft Eligibility checklists with timeline expectations
• Draft Required documentation checklists
• Draft Cost / benefit worksheets
• Draft FAQ sheets addressing common misconceptions
• Increase public awareness in preservation programs.
• Draft “calls-to-action” posts promoting Museum workshops
• Produce short-form educational posts (“Did You Know?” type)
• Design infographics on Mills Act savings and benefits
• Produce short-form spotlights on current historic homes

Training:

Interns will be introduced to the numerous historic preservation programs available at the local, state, and national level.

Interns will be trained in the legal, historical, and architectural criteria for historic designation programs.

Interns will be trained to recognize the criteria for historic designation from the submitted community applications and inquiries.

Interns will be trained to answer the questions residents have about historic preservation programs available to them.

Learning Outcome:

Collaborate on the development of a Historic Preservation Program
Create a Resident Assistance Toolkit
Draft and Launch a Social Media Campaign to raise public awareness
