Position Overview
LAYUP, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit supporting youth athletic development through sports programming, seeks a college PR/Communications student for a hands-on internship. Work directly with leadership and Board on tournament promotion and new sports league development. Build portfolio with real campaigns, Board presentations, and measurable results.

Tasks:
Develop complete communications campaigns from initial concept through stakeholder delivery, including storyboarding, content creation, media relations materials, and print collateral production for tournament promotion and sports league launch
Create and execute 30-day social media content calendars for Instagram/Facebook (25 branded posts, 10 stories, 3 reels) driving 15% follower growth through targeted stakeholder engagement strategies
Conduct competitor analysis of 5 Bay Area youth sports nonprofits, documenting social strategies, event promotion tactics, and audience engagement approaches in professional spreadsheet format
Develop audience personas for key demographics (youth athletes, parents, corporate sponsors, community partners) informing strategic messaging and outreach recommendations
Design 5 professional flyers (print + digital formats) for tournament, league recruitment, and youth programs using Canva following brand style guidelines
Prepare and deliver 3 quarterly Board presentations (10 minutes each) covering campaign performance, social metrics, research findings, and strategic recommendations, including live Q&A
Create branded PowerPoint/Google Slides decks (8-10 slides) matching LAYUP's visual identity for Board reporting and stakeholder communications
Produce quarterly social media performance reports analyzing engagement metrics, follower growth, ROI, and providing data-driven recommendations presented to leadership
Develop sponsor pitch decks (8 slides) and recruitment materials for sports league corporate partnerships
Manage campaign timelines coordinating between leadership, Board, and external stakeholders to ensure on-time delivery of all communications assets
Create 10 reusable Canva templates for recurring content needs (event announcements, sponsor recognition, youth spotlights, research summaries)
Write 3 targeted outreach recommendations (2-page strategic brief) based on market research findings for donor cultivation and community engagement
Monitor and report real-time campaign performance during tournament and league launch weeks, adjusting messaging based on engagement data
Compile professional portfolio (15-page PDF) showcasing all campaign assets, Board presentations, research deliverables, and measurable results
Training:
1. Initial General Employer Orientation (Mandatory - Week 1)
Comprehensive 2-hour onboarding covering LAYUP's 501(c)(3) mission, organizational structure, brand style guide (colors, fonts, messaging tone), platform access (social media, Google Workspace, Canva Pro), and safety protocols.
2. Weekly Scheduled One-on-One Mentor Meetings
30-minute weekly check-ins (Fridays 10am) with Executive Director to review progress, provide 48-hour feedback turnaround on social content, campaign storyboards, and stakeholder messaging, and contextualize weekly assignments.
3. Job Shadowing
Week 2 leadership shadowing during Board communications discussions and stakeholder planning meetings to understand strategic decision-making and professional email protocols.
4. Workshops/Skills Training (Weeks 1-4)
Week 1 Digital Platforms Workshop: Live walkthrough of Instagram/Facebook, content scheduling tools, analytics dashboards
Week 2 Research Methodology Workshop: Competitor analysis framework + live audience persona development
Week 3 Content Creation Workshop: 30-day social calendar development + Canva template training
Week 4 Board Presentation Workshop: Mock 10-minute presentation with Q&A simulation + branded Slides template
5. Provision of Work Samples
Curated examples of successful nonprofit communications campaigns from similar youth sports organizations, including social media calendars, sponsor pitch decks, Board presentation decks, and audience persona templates.
6. Overview/Contextualization of Assigned Tasks
Each Monday assignment includes written brief explaining task objectives, target audience, brand alignment, success metrics, and strategic context within tournament/league campaigns.
7. Training Literature Reviews
Provide competitor analysis reports, case studies showing communications research impact, and best practices guides for nonprofit stakeholder engagement and Board reporting.
