Occupational Therapy Internship /VolunteerAt — California Rehab and Sports Therapy - Downey
The facility is divided into Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy department. Occupational Therapy department focuses on upper extremity injuries from tendinopathy, neuropathy, fracture injuries of fingers, hand, wrist, elbow, and shoulder (shoulder overlaps with PT) to post-operative care. The intern's responsibilities may include setting up patients and exercise equipment, cleaning up the area following treatment, and demonstrating proper exercise techniques to patients.
Tasks:
- The intern will demonstrate their learning outcome by being able to recognize precautions when setting up the patients.
- The intern will demonstrate their learning outcome by setting up appropriate exercise equipment for patients with various diagnoses.
- The intern will demonstrate their learning outcome by applying knowledge from observation and inquiry and properly demonstrate exercise techniques to patients.
Training:
The job shadowing consists of observing how OT treats patients with various diagnoses pertaining to upper extremity. The intern will receive one-on-one meetings/feedback at least once a week and as needed. Mandatory training consists of:
- Education on precautions when setting up patients
- Education and demonstration of each equipment/tools being used to treat patients
Learning Outcome:
1. Feel more confident in understanding what an Occupational Therapist does during evaluation and follow ups
2. Student will understand different type of therapeutic exercises for follow up treatments
