Heermann's Gull Outreach - SUMMER 2026, Monterey Audubon SocietyAt — Monterey Audubon Society (MAS)
Join our conservation team this summer to protect one of our area's charismatic and threatened seabirds: the Heermann’s Gull (HEEG). Seaside’s Broadway corridor is home to a rare inland nesting colony, where these birds have traded coastal cliffs for commercial rooftops. This creates a unique "urban-wildlife" interface that requires dedicated community stewardship.
3 Service Learner Spots
Student Responsibilities:
Service learners will act as Community Ambassadors, engaging with Broadway business owners and visitors to provide "pop-up" environmental education. Tasks include talking to the public and business owners and distributing bilingual educational materials regarding the importance of local biodiversity.
Impact and Learning:
Students will explore the intersection of urban planning and conservation. We seek students passionate about biology, environmental studies, or communication who are ready to advocate for species protection in a bustling urban environment. Help us ensure that Seaside remains a safe haven for the HEEG while fostering community pride in our local ecosystem.
Training will be provided by the organization and supplies will be provided as well.
Opportunity Supervision
Check-ins and volunteer buddies will be used to ensure success.
There may be photos taken of the individuals doing this work and it will take place in a public location.
