Instructional Student Assistant- Peer TutorAt — Learning and Tutoring Services

Opportunity Summary 

Provides academic instructional support for CSTEM courses at CSUSM. Academic support should primarily consist of in person tutoring, but may also include online support, workshops, embedded tutoring, and resource development. Seek to enhance/promote/foster fundamental studying skills to students in order to prepare them for current and future courses by: a. Clarifying and reviewing concepts presented in class b. Providing clear explanation of processes in order to help students solve specific problems c. Listening and responding to academic needs of others with creativity, energy, sensitivity, and patience d. Sharing subject-specific study skills e. Introducing students to other academic support services on campus. and motivate students to become more independent learners.

Opportunity Learning Outcomes 

Through hands on experience and comprehensive training of pedagogical techniques, student staff develop leadership, facilitation, and instructional skills necessary for supporting student learning. Our tutors also gain experience in building professional relationships with faculty, enhancing learning and academic performance in students, and relevant academic support services for those seeking careers in education.

Opportunity Training 

Student staff will complete a two-day pre-semester training (Day 1 is 5.5 hours, Day 2 is 4.8 hours) where they'll learn or review pedagogical tutoring techniques, emergency procedures, policies and procedures, staff and emergency contacts, practice with scenario-based activities, etc. Professional development opportunities such as career readiness, content training, and more are available throughout the semester during tutor downtime. Mandated Reporter training is required and provided.
