Opportunity Summary 

The Community Education intern works under the direction of the Community Education manager in coordination with the Community Health Educators.  The intern is responsible for completing field experience, under supervision in the health education/promotion setting to complete course study in community health education/promotion or related field.  

Tasks:

Program Development:
• Under the supervision of the preceptor, reviews all current curricula and enhances any service lines as necessary.
• Completes research in an area of emerging need or interest for CHOC.
• Assists in data collection and evaluation if appropriate.

Safety/Wellness Advocate:
• Attends local coalition and/or collaborative meetings with Community Education staff as appropriate.
• Participation in community partnerships that focus on injury prevention and health and wellness.
• Assists in serving as a resource person in the clinic’s Family Resource Center.

Customer Service:
• Utilizes excellent customer service skills in all external and internal customer interactions.
• Models excellent customer service utilizing AIDET.
• Demonstrates excellent customer service aligned with CHOC’s mission, vision and values.

Training:

Training and tasks will be varied based on the student schedule and Community Education schedule. There will be shadowing of inpatient Child passenger safety education for parents and CPR training for parents. Community classes, health fairs and meetings can also be attended.

Learning Outcome:

• Completes a department orientation program including department guidelines, policies and procedures.
• Meets with department staff to orient to various service lines.
• Attends community classes on injury prevention and health and wellness topics with a Community Educator. If appropriate, co-instructs with Community Educator and solo presents under supervision.
• Attends Train-the-trainer courses as available during internship.
• Conducts community education on injury prevention and health and wellness at resource and health fairs.
• Completes required number of hours for program compliance.
