Pasadena Media offers hands-on internship opportunities for students and emerging professionals looking to build real-world experience in community media and production. As an intern, you will work alongside our team to support a wide range of projects and initiatives.

Interns at Pasadena Media will:

• Receive comprehensive training in equipment operation, including hands-on instruction across all crew positions in a professional production environment
• Work across multiple production environments, including our Main Studio, Podcast Studio, and on-location settings, gaining versatile experience in a variety of professional production contexts
• Develop full-cycle production skills, with training spanning pre-production, production, and post-production processes
• Support and assist on community productions, gaining practical experience working alongside community producers and crew members
• Participate in studio operations and production logistics, contributing to the behind-the-scenes work that keeps productions running smoothly
• Explore government and public affairs media, with the opportunity to contribute to programming on the government access channel (KPAS)
• Collaborate and network with fellow volunteers and community producers, building meaningful professional relationships within those in similar fields
• Develop a well-rounded understanding of community media, including its role in amplifying underrepresented voices and serving the public interest
• Be able to add to their portfolio/resume, as crew credits earned through volunteering on productions or producing their own show project are fully applicable to academic and career pursuits

At Pasadena Media, our relationship with interns does not end with the completion of the program. Interns are encouraged to continue their involvement as volunteer crew members, community producers, and ongoing collaborators — keeping the door open for long-term growth and opportunity.

Tasks:

- Serve as crew on live and recorded productions, fulfilling roles such as camera operator, audio technician, floor manager, teleprompter operator, technical director, and/or production assistant in the Main Studio, Podcast Studio, and on-location environments
- Assist in pre-production planning, including set-up discussions, show format and layout planning, run-of-shows, and crew meetings
- Operate professional studio and field production equipment, applying training to handle cameras, audio gear, switchers, and other technical equipment in a production setting
- Edit and assemble footage using professional editing software to support post-production delivery of community programming
- Contribute to government access and KPAS programming, supporting the production of public affairs and government channel content
- Participate in production meetings and pre-production discussions, contributing ideas, asking critical questions, and demonstrating an understanding of the production workflow
- Collaborate with community producers and volunteer members, taking direction and contributing professionally across a range of production roles and projects
- Document and reflect on production experiences, tracking crew roles fulfilled, productions participated in, and skills developed throughout the internship for portfolio and resume purposes

Training:

To facilitate a well-rounded and meaningful learning experience, interns at Pasadena Media will receive structured training and ongoing support throughout their placement, including:

- General Orientation — All interns are required to complete an initial orientation covering Pasadena Media's mission, operations, facilities, equipment, staff, and community standards

- Class Assignments — Select Pasadena Media classes include assignments that allow interns to apply and demonstrate the skills developed throughout their training
- Equipment Training & Certification — Hands-on instruction in the operation of studio and field production equipment, with certification required prior to being permitted to handle, operate, and reserve Pasadena Media equipment
- Shadowing — Interns will shadow staff and community producers across a variety of productions and crew positions to observe professional practices in action
- Monthly Community Engagement Team Meeting — Interns will participate in a monthly Community Engagement Team meeting to stay connected with team initiatives and community outreach efforts
- Weekly All-Staff Meeting — Interns will attend the weekly all-staff meeting, providing exposure to organizational operations, team communication, and professional workplace culture
- Task Overviews & Contextualization — Each assigned task will be introduced with clear objectives and context, ensuring interns understand how their contributions connect to the broader production workflow
