ROOTED College InternAt — Orange County Asian and Pacific Islander Community Alliance (OCAPICA)

Summary

\n

Under the supervision of the Lead Program Coordinator, the College Intern will serve as a collaborative, student-centered team member supporting OCAPICA’s Youth Leadership and Development Fellowship, ROOTED, through session and event facilitation, mentorship, Activism (Civic) Project advisement, student engagement, and program support. The intern must have the ability to build and maintain positive relationships with students, fellow interns, OCAPICA staff, and AUHSD faculty. They also must have the ability to work with diverse ethnic and cultural communities, including, but not limited to the following target populations: students of color, LGBTQIA+, and/or undocumented immigrants of varying ages between 13 to 18. This is a position where student hours and workload are considered and accommodated.

Essential Functions (Include, But Not Limited To)

\n

\n

1. Attend and facilitate weekly in-person after-school sessions (3:30 PM - 6:30 PM) on Tuesdays at TBD (High School within AUHSD - Anaheim, CA) OR (3:30 PM - 6:30 PM) Wednesdays at Anaheim High School

\n


2. Attend and facilitate supplemental sessions and events of various dates/days, times and locations (within or near Anaheim, CA) 

\n


3. Provide individualized and group mentorship to high school students

\n


4. Advise students’ Activism Projects

\n


5. Attend ROOTED Team meetings, primarily held virtually, with occasional in-person meetings in Garden Grove, CA

\n


6. Help manage communication channels (e.g., Remind)

\n


7. Track student attendance tracking and assignment completion 

\n


8. Complete other projects as assigned to meet program, department, and agency missions, goals, and objectives

\n

Minimum Qualifications - Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

\n

\n

1. Regular attendance required 

\n


2. Reliable transportation for sessions/workshops and events in Anaheim and occasional meetings in Garden Grove

\n


3. Reliable internet access for virtual meetings

\n


4. Live scan/background check required

\n


5. Proficiency with Google Drive and Canva preferred

\n


6. Strong organizational, communication, teamwork, and leadership skills with the ability to meet deadlines and pay attention to details

\n


7. Experience working with diverse teams and communities, including youth ages 13-18 from various cultural backgrounds

\n


8. Bilingual skills preferred (Spanish, Vietnamese, or other Asian languages)  

\n


9. Must be comfortable with the philosophy and goals of OCAPICA and ROOTED

Learning Outcomes

\n

Students will learn to:

- Facilitate and plan youth workshops and events
- Train and mentor high school youth leaders
- Work on a diverse team consisting of youth staff and interns
- Learn the structure of a nonprofit organization and how it operates
- Increase their interpersonal skills working with high school youth

Placement at either Magnolia High School (2450 W Ball Rd, Anaheim, CA 92804) or Anaheim High School (811 W Lincoln Ave, Anaheim, CA 92805). Travel to multiple Anaheim Union High School District high schools may apply.
