Opportunity Summary 

BC Adaptive Fitness interns will gain hands-on experience by shadowing personal trainers/coaches in a professional adaptive fitness environment. This internship is designed for students pursuing careers in exercise science, kinesiology, physical therapy, occupational therapy, adaptive physical education, recreation, healthcare, or related fields. Interns will observe training sessions, assist with daily gym operations, and develop an understanding of working with individuals of all abilities.

Responsibilities

Shadow personal trainers/coaches during one-on-one and group training sessions.

Observe coaching techniques, exercise programming, and client progressions.

Assist trainers during group fitness classes by setting up equipment, encouraging participants, and ensuring a safe training environment.

Maintain athlete records, attendance logs, progress reports, and other administrative documentation.

Prepare training areas before sessions and return equipment after use.

Assist with gym cleanliness, organization, and routine facility maintenance.

Ensure equipment is sanitized and properly stored after each session.

Observe and learn appropriate communication techniques for working with individuals with varying abilities and support needs.

Attend staff meetings and training opportunities when available.

Complete additional projects assigned by supervisors that support gym operations.

Tasks:

Shadow certified personal trainers/coacches during one-on-one and group fitness sessions to observe coaching techniques, exercise programming, and client interactions.
Assist trainers with implementing adaptive exercise programs under supervision.
Support group fitness classes by helping with exercise demonstrations, participant engagement, and equipment setup.
Observe client assessments and learn how individualized fitness programs are developed and modified.
Maintain athlete progress reports, attendance records, and other client documentation.
Communicate professionally with clients, families, and staff while providing excellent customer service.
Monitor gym safety by assisting with equipment organization, sanitation, and maintaining a clean training environment.
Participate in staff meetings, training sessions, and supervisor feedback meetings to support professional development.
Complete special projects related to gym operations, adaptive fitness programming, or client services as assigned.

Training:

Complete a general workplace orientation covering company policies, safety procedures, professionalism, and confidentiality.
Shadow experienced personal trainers/coaches during one-on-one and group fitness sessions.
Receive hands-on training while assisting with group classes, athlete support, and daily gym operations.
Learn proper documentation and record-keeping for athlete progress and attendance.
Receive training on gym cleanliness, equipment maintenance, and safety protocols.
Meet regularly with a supervisor for feedback, mentoring, and progress evaluations.
Participate in ongoing learning about adaptive fitness, client communication, and working with individuals of all abilities.

Learning Outcome:

By the end of the internship, interns will:

1. Gain exposure to adaptive fitness training techniques.
2. Develop professional communication skills with clients, families, and staff.
3. Understand proper gym operations and safety procedures.
4. Learn documentation and record-keeping practices used in a fitness setting.
5. Build confidence by assisting in both individual and group exercise environments.
6. Develop organizational and teamwork skills in a professional setting.
