Heritage Garden Project / Plant IDs & Interpretive PanelsAt — Monterey County Historical Society (MCHS)
Join the volunteers and docents of the Monterey County Historical Society in their efforts to create a Heritage Garden replete with plant identification listings and interpretive panels.
Both larger interpretive panels will be designed and graphics generated for the Heritage Garden signage, and these will be accompanied by plant-specific interpretive signage intended to provide the Common and Scientific names of each plant and their usage through history.
Presently, both a former professor of Botany and a professional landscaper are working to transform the 5-acre parcel of the Boronda Adobe History Center into a botanical garden.
With your help, we will open this new, more welcoming garden to our Salinas community, where visitors are welcome to partake of fruits, vegetables, and spices.
Students will be provided a basic orientation to the grounds, plants, and broader vision for the expanded heritage garden. Our Botanist and Landscaper will provide that essential orientation to the larger vision and needs of the heritage garden.
Though students will require gardening gloves and garden trowels or shovels, the Society has protective equipment such as gloves or goggles; students should come equipped with water for hydration and/or lunch and snacks, as most work on the garden will take place outdoors.
If working on text and graphic arts for the interpretive signage, these tasks may be construed as hybrid, so long as those working on signage make at least two to three visits to the Society to familiarize themselves with our needs as per signage and display.
