Fullerton Museum Center – Internship Program

Thank you for your interest in becoming an intern at the Fullerton Museum Center. Our Internship Program is designed to provide hands-on professional experience while enhancing students’ understanding of museum operations, marketing, public relations, communications, and community engagement. The Senior Marketing/PR Intern will take on an increased level of responsibility and independence, gaining practical experience in developing and coordinating marketing and public relations initiatives for a cultural institution.

This paid internship may be completed for academic credit or for non-academic professional experience and is offered for the duration of an academic semester.

Position Overview

The Senior Marketing/PR Intern will work closely with the Museum's marketing, communications, and administrative teams to support the development and execution of marketing and public relations initiatives. This position is intended for a motivated student or recent graduate who has demonstrated experience or strong interest in marketing, public relations, communications, social media, journalism, or a related field.

In addition to completing assigned marketing and communications projects, the Senior Marketing/PR Intern may take a lead role in coordinating campaigns, tracking outreach, developing content, communicating with media and community partners, and supporting the work of other marketing interns.

The ideal candidate is organized, creative, proactive, comfortable taking initiative, and capable of managing multiple projects and deadlines in a fast-paced museum environment.

Responsibilities

Typical responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Assist in developing and implementing marketing and public relations strategies for exhibitions, programs, events, and Museum initiatives

  • Take a lead role in coordinating assigned marketing campaigns and promotional projects from planning through completion

  • Draft, edit, and distribute press releases, media advisories, promotional copy, newsletters, event announcements, and other communications

  • Research, develop, and maintain relationships with local, regional, and specialized media contacts

  • Conduct media outreach and assist with coordinating interviews, press opportunities, event coverage, and other publicity efforts

  • Create, schedule, and coordinate social media content across platforms including Instagram, Facebook, X, TikTok, and other relevant channels

  • Develop social media content calendars and assist with maintaining a consistent voice and visual identity across platforms

  • Monitor social media engagement, audience trends, and campaign performance

  • Track marketing, media, and social media analytics and prepare basic reports summarizing results

  • Assist with developing promotional materials, including flyers, digital graphics, email campaigns, advertisements, and other marketing collateral

  • Research potential advertising, promotional, community partnership, and media opportunities

  • Assist with email marketing, website content, event listings, and other digital communications

  • Coordinate marketing and public relations outreach with community organizations, businesses, schools, cultural institutions, and other partners

  • Represent the Museum professionally at public programs, community events, receptions, and promotional activities

  • Assist with event promotion before, during, and after Museum programs and special events

  • Maintain organized records of media contacts, promotional opportunities, campaign activity, and outreach

  • Help establish timelines and track deadlines for assigned marketing and PR projects

  • Provide support and guidance to Marketing/PR Interns on assigned projects when appropriate

  • Assist with onboarding, coordinating, or reviewing work completed by junior marketing interns under staff direction

  • Identify opportunities to improve the Museum's marketing and communications efforts and present ideas to Museum staff

  • Support day-to-day communications, administrative tasks, and other special projects as needed

Senior-Level Expectations

The Senior Marketing/PR Intern is expected to demonstrate a greater degree of independence and responsibility than an entry-level intern. Depending on experience and departmental needs, the Senior Intern may be responsible for:

  • Taking ownership of specific marketing or PR projects

  • Establishing project timelines and following through on deadlines

  • Coordinating with multiple staff members, interns, vendors, media contacts, and community partners

  • Providing updates on project progress and identifying potential issues before deadlines

  • Reviewing and proofreading marketing and communications materials for accuracy and consistency

  • Assisting with the coordination and delegation of tasks among junior marketing interns

  • Bringing new ideas and strategies to the Museum's marketing and communications efforts

  • Representing the Museum professionally and serving as a positive example for other interns

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled college students or recent graduates

  • Coursework, experience, or demonstrated interest in marketing, communications, public relations, journalism, digital marketing, social media, or a related field

  • Previous internship, volunteer, academic, or professional experience in marketing, communications, public relations, social media, or a related area preferred

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Excellent proofreading, editing, and organizational skills

  • Familiarity with major social media platforms, digital communications, and current social media trends

  • Ability to develop creative content and promotional ideas

  • Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines

  • Ability to work independently while also collaborating effectively with staff and interns

  • Strong interpersonal and professional communication skills

  • Professional, reliable, proactive, and detail-oriented

  • Ability to represent the Fullerton Museum Center professionally when communicating with media, community partners, and the public

Preferred Qualifications

The following qualifications are preferred but not required:

  • Experience creating social media content or managing social media accounts

  • Experience writing press releases, articles, newsletters, or promotional copy

  • Experience with Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, or similar design software

  • Experience with email marketing or website content management systems

  • Familiarity with social media analytics and digital marketing metrics

  • Experience coordinating events, campaigns, or community outreach

  • Previous experience working in a museum, nonprofit, arts organization, cultural institution, or community organization

Learning Opportunities

Although the Senior Marketing/PR Intern will primarily work within the Museum's marketing and communications functions, interns will have opportunities to observe and participate in other areas of museum operations, including exhibitions, education, collections, visitor services, programming, development, and special events.

The position is designed to provide practical experience in professional communications and nonprofit cultural institution operations. The Senior Intern may also gain experience in project management, media relations, campaign development, community outreach, event promotion, audience engagement, and team coordination.

The Fullerton Museum Center staff will work with students and academic advisors to support internship and independent study requirements at the student's school, if academic credit is being pursued.
