Opportunity Summary

PR Construction's rotational internship gives students and early-career candidates hands-on exposure to how a commercial GC delivers projects from bid to build. Interns rotate through three core departments over the course of the program, working alongside experienced mentors and contributing to live projects rather than sitting on the sidelines.

Tasks:

Estimating / Preconstruction Rotation

Prepare quantity takeoffs for defined scopes of work using project plans and specifications.
Assist in assembling and issuing subcontractor bid packages, and help track and organize incoming bids.
Support proposal and project description development by drafting scope narratives and compiling supporting documentation.
Research and help maintain subcontractor coverage lists for assigned regions or trades.

Operations / Project Management Rotation

Draft and log submittals and RFIs, and track their status through the review cycle.
Help maintain project documentation, including schedules, meeting notes, and correspondence logs.
Review construction documents (plans, specs, schedules) to support project teams and identify coordination items.
Assist in preparing owner and subcontractor communications under mentor review.

Field Operations Rotation

Accompany field superintendents on site walks to observe and document jobsite progress, safety, and quality.
Assist with quality control checks and help document field conditions against plans and specifications.
Support site coordination tasks and observe how field issues are escalated and resolved.

Cross-Rotation / Capstone

Synthesize the rotational experience into a final capstone presentation delivered to company leadership.
Contribute to live projects by producing work products that are reviewed and used by project teams.

Supporting duties (minority of time)

General administrative support such as file organization, data entry into project systems, and meeting scheduling.

Training:

Students in PR Construction's rotational internship receive structured training and mentorship throughout the placement to support their learning outcomes:

General Employer Orientation (mandatory) — At the start of the placement, all interns complete an onboarding session covering company overview, jobsite safety, workplace policies, and an introduction to the project teams and departments they'll rotate through.
Weekly One-on-One Mentor Meetings — Each intern is paired with department mentors across their rotations (estimating, operations, and field operations). Scheduled weekly check-ins provide feedback, answer questions, and connect day-to-day tasks back to the broader project lifecycle.
Job Shadowing — Interns shadow experienced staff—estimators, project managers, and field superintendents—to observe real workflows before taking on tasks independently. Field shadowing with superintendents gives direct exposure to jobsite coordination, safety, and quality control.
Task Overview & Contextualization — Before each assignment, mentors explain not just how to complete a task but why it matters and where it fits in the project. This ensures interns understand the purpose behind takeoffs, submittals, RFIs, and other deliverables.
Provision of Work Samples — Interns are given examples of completed deliverables (proposals, takeoffs, project documentation) to use as reference points and quality benchmarks for their own work.
Rotational Cross-Training — By moving through three departments, interns build a well-rounded understanding of how estimating, operations, and field teams hand off work and depend on one another.
Capstone Presentation Preparation — Toward the end of the program, interns receive guidance and feedback as they prepare a final presentation synthesizing their experience.

Learning Outcome:

By the end of the rotational internship, the student will be able to:

Describe how a commercial general contractor delivers a project from bid to build, explaining the roles of estimating, operations, and field teams and how work hands off between them.
Perform core preconstruction and project support tasks, including assisting with takeoffs, subcontractor bid coordination, submittals, RFIs, and project documentation.
Read and interpret construction documents such as plans, specifications, and schedules, and connect what's on paper to what's happening in the field.
Communicate effectively in a professional construction environment, coordinating with subcontractors, mentors, and project teams across both office and jobsite settings.
Present work and reflect on learning by synthesizing the rotational experience into a final capstone presentation.
