Opportunity Summary

The Richman Read to Succeed Scholarship project is a specialized workforce-development and service-learning opportunity offered through the CSUF Center for Healthy Neighborhoods (CHN).

Student interns receive project-specific training and supervised field experience designed to strengthen the academic and workplace skills needed for careers in education and related child -serving professions. Student interns provide individualized, homework-based academic assistance, reading reinforcement, mentoring, and encouragement to elementary school students. Each intern serves two days per week at Richman Elementary School and one day per week at CHN for one complete 12-week session plus onboarding training hours.

Required Schedule and Commitment

• Participate in weekly 30- to 60-minute supervision and coaching
• Maintain reliable attendance and punctuality because interns are assigned to individual

Primary Responsibilities

Under the supervision of designated CHN staff, interns will:

• Provide individualized, standards-aligned homework
• Deliver reading-intensive support when homework is not assigned or when reading reinforcement is identified as a priority.
• Apply the reading and tutoring strategies introduced during specialized
• Provide mentoring and positive encouragement that strengthen student confidence, persistence, and academic engagement.
• Adapt tutoring approaches to students’ academic needs and learning
• Prepare tutoring materials and electronic learning
• Maintain accurate attendance, tutoring notes, and student progress
• Communicate appropriate progress updates to parents or
• Coordinate with CHN staff and designated school-site
• Follow CHN, Richman Elementary School, Fullerton School District, and CSUF requirements related to confidentiality, mandated reporting, safety, professional boundaries, and conduct.

 Tasks:

Under the supervision of designated CHN staff, interns will:

Student Intern(s) will:
1. Work directly with the underserved and vulnerable monolingual Spanish
population

2. Work one-on-one with students to provide additional guidance on areas of difficulty

3. Interact with parents/guardians to provide progress updates at the end of each tutoring session

4. Collaborate with other tutors/interns to help facilitate the learning process of students

5. Represent the Center and the University in a respectful and professional manner

On occasions, student intern(s) may also work on other assigned tasks not specifically listed above. Student Intern(s) interested in the position must be motivated, have patience, and be willing to work with children.

Training:

Specialized Training and Supervision

Read to Succeed interns must complete 20 hours of project-specific training and professional development. Approximately 15 hours will be completed before direct tutoring begins, and approximately five hours will be completed during the 12-week placement.

Training begins during the first few weeks of the semester. All interns will receive instruction on Center policies and procedures, best practices for tutoring children and youth, and resilience and self-regulation strategies.

Training will address:

- Individualized homework-intervention
- At least three evidence-informed reading
- One-to-one tutoring and student
- Mentoring and positive
- Culturally responsive communication with children and
- Recognizing and responding to different learning
- Objective notetaking and student progress
- Confidentiality, mandated reporting, safety, and professional
- School-site procedures and escalation
- Workplace communication, reliability, collaboration, and reflective

Weekly supervision sessions will provide interns with continued coaching, opportunities to review student progress, feedback on their tutoring practices, and support addressing challenges.

By completing the internship, interns will be able to:
