The intern will demonstrate their learning outcomes through the following activities:

Specialty Behavioral Health Orientation and Professional Learning

Participate in structured orientation, training, professional development, and supervised learning experiences related to the operations of a specialty outpatient mental health practice. Interns may receive educational exposure to trauma-informed and attachment-focused care, professional specialization, behavioral health entrepreneurship, consultation, leadership, community engagement, program development, and specialty and integrative approaches used by professionals within the practice. Educational exposure may include areas such as EMDR, Attachment-Focused EMDR, Internal Family Systems, polyvagal-informed approaches, Somatic Experiencing, Emotionally Focused Therapy, addiction and family-systems-informed care, Reiki, and other integrative or holistic wellness approaches. Interns are not being clinically trained or authorized to independently practice these treatment modalities.

Population and Community Need Selection

Identify, with supervisor approval, a specific population or community need that will serve as the focus of the semester-long Community Impact Project. Potential populations may include college students, veterans, active-duty military members and families, first responders, law-enforcement professionals and families, educators, parents, youth-serving organizations, communities affected by addiction, or other approved populations.

Community Needs Assessment and Research

Research the selected population's behavioral health needs, strengths, barriers to services, cultural and community considerations, existing resources, relevant organizations, and opportunities for education or community support. Develop a Community Needs and Opportunities Summary.

Community Resource and Partnership Mapping

Identify appropriate organizations, institutions, professionals, community programs, and resources serving the selected population. Develop a Community Resource and Partnership Map identifying resources, potential collaborators, gaps, and opportunities for community engagement.

Supervised Community Engagement

Participate in approved professional and community-engagement experiences, which may include community meetings, university activities, workshops, outreach events, speaking engagements, professional networking, organizational meetings, and meetings with community partners. Interns will not independently provide clinical services, transport clients or community participants, or independently work with clients or vulnerable populations.

Community Impact Project Development

Develop a supervisor-approved Community Impact Project addressing an identified behavioral health, wellness, educational, or community need.

• Community conversations
• Educational resource initiatives
• Wellness events
• Professional or community presentations
• Resource-awareness initiatives
• Other supervisor-approved community-based projects

The Community Impact Project Proposal will identify:

• Target population
• Identified community need
• Proposed response
• Intended audience
• Project goals
• Community partners/resources
• Implementation plan
• Evaluation strategy

Project Implementation or Pilot

Under professional supervision, assist with the implementation, pilot, presentation, or delivery of the approved Community Impact Project.

Evaluation and Impact Documentation

Gather appropriate nonclinical feedback and project information when applicable. Students will evaluate implementation, lessons learned, areas for improvement, and opportunities for continuation or adaptation. Develop a Community Impact/Evaluation Summary.

Sustainability, Entrepreneurship, and Consultation

Examine the project from an organizational and sustainability perspective, including continuation or replication, potential community partnerships, resources required for expansion, scalability, program-development considerations, and potential sponsorship, grant, partnership, or other funding opportunities that could support future expansion. Students are not responsible for independently securing funding.

Community Impact Portfolio and Final Presentation

Develop a professional Community Impact Portfolio containing applicable internship artifacts and deliver a final presentation summarizing: The Community -> The Need -> What I Learned -> What We Developed -> What We Did -> Community Impact -> What Could Come Next -> Professional Growth.

Approximate Duration: One academic semester / approximately 15 weeks
Approximate Commitment: 8 hours per week, adjusted as necessary to meet the student's academic internship requirements.
