Fall 2026 HIST 4940/5940At — Stan State Public History Program

Opportunity Summary

Desired Qualifications: Previous enrollment in Stan State public history courses (HIST 4005, 4006, or 4/5940).  Concurrent enrollment in HIST 5820.

Learning Opportunities and Duties: Work with Dr. Cullison on service learning and community engagement components of her HIST 5820, Graduate Studies -Public history course. Internship focus will be on Learning and Training Deliverables below:

  • Learn to create digital and research-ready oral history transcripts. Work with a wider variety of materials than students in HIST 5820 -  using digital audio recordings as well as potentially VHS non-digitized recordings.  Like 5820 students, convert mp4 to m4a files, run auto-generated transcripts through YouTube, and then use product and other data to generate working-file transcripts.  Correct and improve the final human-captioned transcript through Sublime Text.  Unlike 5820 students, engage a wider variety of additional and fragmented information (such as non-digital recordings, duplicate/conflicting summaries, rough paper transcripts, partial paper transcripts) in generating rough drafts.
  • Training Deliverables: 8-10 human captioned transcripts plus one final internship capstone including a reflection on transcription process as well as research-based analysis of historical themes and content covered in a selection of these interviews.  Possibly present extra research and analysis to HIST 5820 peers.
