Physical Therapy Observation InternshipAt — Rehab United Sports Medicine and Physical Therapy Inc.

Observe within an outpatient orthopedic physical therapy clinic during which you will become more familiar with the profession, the gait cycle, common gait deviations, clinical reasoning of differentiating causes of pain, clinical reasoning of exercise prescription and progressions, and proper muscle function and joint sequencing of the shoulder girdle.

Gait observation: student will identify to supervisor the various cycles of gait.

Student will be able to describe basic motions happening during each cycle, and explain them to the supervisor.
Student will be able to properly demonstrate certain shoulder girdle based exercises for a patient
Student will be able to identify common deviations of exercises and cue to correct errant movement strategies
Student will be able to professionally communicate to staff amd patients in the clinic.

Training:

Clinic tour establishing exits and locations of emergency equipment (ex: AED, Fire extinguishers).
Learning the observational role of the student, expectations for interacting with other staff and patients
Job shadowing to familiarize with the PT profession in an outpatient orthopedic setting
1 on 1 meetings bi-weekly to discuss progress towards learning goals
Movement analysis/observational training

Learning Outcomes:

1. Student will be able to systematically observe and describe gait deviations using a proximal to distal, triplane framework.
2. Student will become more familiar with differentiating common musculoskeletal pain presentations during functional movement screens by anatomical location and mechanism
3. Become more familiar with justifying exercise progression through clinical reasoning and evidence.
4. Become more familiar with proper muscle activation and arthrokinematic sequencing of the shoulder girlie during common exercises.
