First Mayor's House / Harvey House Museum
Organization Description
The purpose of the non-profit foundation is to utilize its unique asset (the first mayor's house) to provide the community with a snapshot of family life in an agricultural town of the 1870's and to tell the story of transportation and the development of the Salinas Valley. Specifically, our purpose is to support the teaching of history and social studies in Monterey County schools.
Our Guidelines and Goals:
- Impact education, helping schools create a positive learning environment
- Reflect current educational practices in teaching and learning, meeting Common Core State Standards
- Assist teachers to engage their kids- to get their students to interact with history, using the best teaching techniques that engage all kids despite differences in learning skills, leaking styles, and culture
- Assist teachers by organizing and implementing Professional Development Institutes to provide background, teaching strategies, and lesson plans
- Develop programs at the FMH and on the website that provide ideas and material to make the visit to the FMH a part of Salinas life
- Develop a program that can be replicated and extended beyond the FMH
