Organization Description

Mission: To contribute to the health, well-being, empowerment and self-determination of under-served populations in the great Long Beach community. By providing affordable, nutritious, organic foods and eventually other goods and services, accessible to all, through a locally-oriented, collectively-managed, not-for-profit workers’ cooperative. Our intention is for this to be a platform for building mutually-beneficial community connections and to decrease dependency on the current corporate-owned structure. We are a produce delivery service, similar to an ice cream truck, with a specific and dependable route so that our clients know when to expect us and where. We are choosing to use the California Cooperative Business Model.

Program Information

Student volunteers will have the option to work distribution where they will help set up our table with food, hygiene products, and clothing in the parks on weekends. During the week, we are open to the community from our warehouse at 3311 E 59th St LB 90805 where people come and pick up bags or boxes of groceries. Every Saturday, Sunday and Monday, we pack and deliver bags to 850 people who are unable to leave their homes and have no other way to obtain food. They will be distributing these items to those in need. Student volunteers may also have the opportunity to help organize and stock the warehouse, assist with building and maintaining gardens, and possibly assisting with other aspects of the organization such as grant writing and community outreach. We also build gardens about once/month.

All students, regardless of race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, sex, gender, gender identity, and sexual orientation, are open and welcome to participate.

Health & Safety

Students must maintain safe carrying and lifting procedures if they are going to be carrying some of the heavy items. Students must also be aware and use the buddy system while at the distribution sites.

We help a wide spectrum of people. Some have addiction or mental health issues but mostly they are just people from every age group and ethnicity who are having a very hard time making ends meet and some are unhoused.

No recent positive covid testsWe deliver or provide service to elderly and disabled recipients and people with disabilities. The majority of volunteers, staff and/or recipients have at one point or another tested positive for Covid. We have multiple supervisors on site at all times.I'm not sure what this question means but there are managers on site at all times and we like volunteers to participate in distributing food in the parks as well. There are managers there driving the bus and managing the volunteers. We have multiple warehouse managers available on site at all times to do the supervision

We have several warehouse managers who will help them learn how to perform the duties of filling food orders and others who help on the bus in the parks and in the lobby of the food pantry.
