Organization Description

We seek to cultivate a diverse and interdisciplinary community of scholars. By supporting diverse types of research, education, and outreach across disciplines we initiate innovative resource management solutions. The SRIRS and its community seeks to address management challenges from multiple perspectives that will enable energetic, well-rounded, and successful responses to our changing natural and human landscapes. SRIRS is interdisciplinary in nature and is inclusive of all partners, who currently span a breadth of academic programs both within CI and externally.

Health & Safety

Damage to site - would include potential damage to trails or roads that have occurred from rain events. We are on a remote island within Channel Islands National Park. There are no paved roads.

There is always the potential to overlap with other groups while on island, or work with island partners.

SRIRS Staff go over risks associated with accessing wilderness areas on behalf of the National Park Service. Risks can include but are not limited to sunburn, dehydration, ticks, hantavirus (avoided by staying out of closed structures), poison oak, biting insects, cliff edges, ocean/surf, uneven ground or trails.

Group leaders bringing students out are responsible for the oversight of their students. SRIRS Staff will ensure the facility is working to the best of their ability, and will be a resource related to the history of the island(s), trails and distances, weather & marine forecasts, can help serve as first responders if an injury or medical issue should occur and will help facilitate medivac should Park Dispatch deem that necessary. Group leaders (2-3) will be provided hand-held radios for island communications while out in the field as well as a map of the island and 1st aid kit. SRIRS Staff also have a satellite phone and wi-fi calling available via Starlink to provide multiple redundancies for emergency coordination and response.
