Inside- The clients we serve in Alzheimer’s Day Care Resource Center have some form of demential/ cognitive impairment. The volunteer may be exposed to behaviors or tendencies some seniors manifest due to Alzheimer’s/ Dementia. For Example a client may get agitated or get may make inappropriate comments and/or false statements/accusations although this is not the norm.
Outside- Senior Services Department programs are community based which require staff to go to visit clients in their homes. The purpose is to complete an evaluation or assessment based on the program requirements. For Example : Our home delivered meal program requires a home visit to complete a nutritional assessment, home based care requires an evaluation to assess for appropriateness for personal care services, care management requires initial and quarterly visits, Alzheimer’s Day Care requires visit for assessing/ screening for appropriate. Other risks include: Driving and walking in unfamiliar areas/ communities, exposure to substandard living conditions/ environmental apartments are not ADA (no elevators). Safety is an ongoing dialogue with all staff/ volunteers/ interns.
