Service Learning OpportunitiesAt — Channel Islands Restoration
Do you want to save the environment? If you want to make a difference by protecting endangered native habitat and you enjoy working in unique and beautiful places, then Channel Islands Restoration is what you're looking for! Learn to recognize and remove invasive plants in a variety of locations between CSUCI and Santa Barbara. Be prepared to hike and "garden" in the wild; work ranges from site walks and surveys to invasive plant removal to planting natives and caring for newly planted natives, dependent on the time of year. Hours may vary from a few to all day dependent on location and task. Schedules, tasks and work locations are flexible, depending on student interest and transportation factors. Education trips to native plant nurseries, fire ecology walks, ethnobotany sessions, and day or multi-day trips to the Channel Islands can be arranged as part of your experience.
Why invasive plants pose a problem for native plants, native animals, and our local ecosystems. How to identify common native and invasive plant species. Habitat restoration techniques and practices. Vegetation survey techniques.
Orientation and training regarding methods of vegetation monitoring and conducting surveys, native planting techniques and invasive plant removal will be provided at each site.
Each on site session will begin with an orientation which will include tool safety and other safety considerations (poison oak, rattlesnakes, etc.)
