Communications InternAt — Webcor

Opportunity Summary

Webcor has an opening for a paid internship in the company’s Communications department. Webcor, a commercial general contractor and builder, is responsible for some of the most iconic structures in the Bay Area, including the California Academy of Sciences, San Francisco General Hospital, the Salesforce Transit Center, and the Intercontinental Hotel San Francisco. The Genesis Marina project in Brisbane has been recognized as the world’s first zero-waste commercial construction project. The company has built equally impressive projects throughout California, from the Century Plaza Hotel and Towers in Los Angeles to a massive $2-billion expansion of UC Merced. The company is currently building the Spartan Athletic Center at San Jose State University, among other projects. You can learn more about the company at https://www.webcor.com. The 20-hour-per-week position pays $22 per hour. Webcor has offices in San Francisco, Alameda, and San Jose, but about half of the work can be handled remotely. You will have the opportunity to work both in company offices and visit active job sites. The Communications department handles both internal and external communication. The department is small – there are just two of us – so the intern will have hands-on experience in both arenas, researching and preparing articles for the company intranet, handling updates to the digital signage program, and assisting with the preparation and distribution of press releases (including assisting journalists preparing stories), among other activities. The position will also entail some administrative work, such as processing Communications department invoices.

Opportunity Learning Outcomes

Intern will learn to work within a team and to communicate effectively with colleagues and supervisors
Intern will develop working knowledge of business operations
Intern will learn to develop communications for both internal and external communications across multiple platforms, including the company intranet, email, digital signage, and social media
Intern will be able to demonstrate knowledge of the organization through communicating with internal and external customers through various forms of communication, phone calls, email correspondence, interoffice communication during team meetings and written reports.
Intern will develop a practical understanding of the link between internal and external communication, strategic planning to ensure measurable objectives are met, and the role communication plays in achieving organizational outcomes.

Opportunity Training

Intern will undergo safety training and participate in a new-hire orientation. Hands-on training from the communications team will be handled on a coaching basis (as we expect the intern will be a communications major with some understanding of the various activities in which they will participate, such as conducting interviews and writing articles).

Additional risk specific to this opportunity

Safety training will be required (and provided) before the intern can access Webcor facilities. Since the intern will spend some time on active construction job sites, we will expect the intern to abide by Webcor's stringent safety requirements.
