Opportunity Summary 

In this limited duration, non-sworn (unarmed) position, Sheriff's Service Cadets learn and gain additional experience in preparation for a career in law enforcement. Incumbents in this trainee-level classification are always temporarily appointed, and work on a Services-As-Needed basis (not to exceed 960 hours per fiscal year), while attending an accredited college or university to earn a degree in Criminal Justice or a closely related field; or while attending a specific training program to be eligible to take a California P.O.S.T. basic certification exam.

Opportunity Learning Outcomes 

The following duties are performed by employees in this classification however each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed: -Assist the Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Services with the delivery of emergency preparedness information, tools and training to the public and no profit agencies within Alameda County. -Participate in crime prevention activities such as neighborhood watch meetings, school and community group presentations, and Sheriff's Office building tours. -Photocopies, files, indexes and locates law enforcement records and related paperwork. -Assist with animal control details and functions with direct supervision. -Attends weekend and/or evening training sessions. -Rides with Deputy Sheriff's to observe and learn peace officer responsibilities and techniques. -Assists with Sherif Explorer posts.

Opportunity Training 

Animal Services - The primary function of this unit includes operating a shelter in East Alameda County, and providing field services to the City of Dublin and unincorporated parts of Alameda County. Coroner's Bureau/Criminalistics Laboratory - Staff in these units utilize specialized forensic science methods to determine cause of death and interpret evidence from criminal case investigations. Dublin Police Services - Cadets assigned to DPS assist with Crime Prevention Unit services with the community, building career pathways with the School Resource Officer Unit and assisting with patrol related functions. -Office of Emergency Services - Is responsible for preparing Alameda County to respond efficiently and effectively to emergencies. -Regional Training Centr and Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (EVOC) - Accredited facility that provides public safety and law enforcement training including peace officer basic academy. -Detention & Corrections: Santa Rita Jail - County correctional facility that houses approximately 2,000 male and female prisoners. -Tri-Valley Substation and Youth and Family Services Bureau (YFSB) - Crime Prevention Unit - Activities of YFSB involve community outreach and the delivery of psychotherapeutic and related services to high-risk youth and their family.
