Parkinson's Exercise Program InternshipAt — City of Union City - Community & Recreation Services
The Parkinson’s Exercise Program was founded in 2016 to provide the tri-city residents affected by Parkinson’s Disease (PD) a means to combat their condition through exercise. This program is offered through the Union City Community & Recreation Services Department, and specifically at the Mark Green Sports Center in Union City. This exercise program offers classes ranging from physical therapy based programs like PWR! Moves and combat focused programs like Rock Steady Boxing among. Each class is centered around evidenced-based research that supports the specific movements and exercise models that we prescribe. This program maintains working relationships with local hospitals, the Parkinson’s Foundation, and actively participates in special events to help fundraise for the fight against Parkinson’s Disease.
By the end of this opportunity, students will have: - Learned about the benefits of exercise for Parkinson’s Disease - Learned about various coaching techniques for group and individual settings - Learned about how to design an exercise class/program for groups - Gained experience working with a population with Neurological Conditions in both a one-on-one and group setting - Better understand the needs of people living with Parkinson’s as well as their families.
Students will be introduced to the program with an orientation lasting 1.5-2 hours. Following this orientation, students will receive separate 1-2 hour trainings on topics related to their responsibilities including: assessments for new and current participants, PWR! Moves - specific exercises and movements, and Boxing technique and boxing coaching techniques. After initial training sessions, students will then be introduced to shadow instructors during in-person exercise classes while under the supervision of the Recreation Coordinator for 1-2 weeks. After this period, students will be allowed to help assist with classes, under the guidance of class instructors and staff.
Work will require prolonged periods of standing, and walking. It will require lifting, bending, stooping, stretching, pushing, and pulling. Interns will assist with set-up/clean-up and administration of Parkinson’s Exercise Classes. Interns are required to attend orientation prior to starting an internship (one day 1.5-2hrs) ● Are required to obtain the following documentation from their student health department or personal physician prior to the start of internship: ● TB test ● Are required to hold current certifications in first aid and CPR
Students can email their interest in applying for the internship to robertmagbanua@unioncity.org. Included in that email should be their resume, copies of their CPR/AED, and current TB test. If CPR/AED or TB tests are pending, they can indicate that in the email. The Recreation Coordinator will schedule a short interview to explain what the internship will entail and to see if it would be a good fit for the student.
