Opportunity Summary 

California Institution for Men (CIM) Recreation Therapy Internship program aspires to provide a positive supportive training experience that will prepare interns for careers in recreation therapy. We do this by providing a strong foundation in ethics, assessment, group planning, group implementation, evaluation, documentation, professionalism, and administration. A special emphasis is placed on the development of these skills within an organization that serves a diverse population and employs a diverse group of professionals.

Opportunity Learning Outcomes 

At the conclusion of the program, the intern will gain experience and knowledge to assist with the recreation therapy certification examination as well as prepared for a recreation therapy career in a clinical setting.

Opportunity Training 

The Recreation Therapy intern will receive Electronic Health Records System (EHRS) training, which is the computer software used for healthcare documentation in the institution. Also, the RT intern will complete the new employee orientation and safety training. Additionally, the intern will receive recreation therapy training by the recreation therapist, CTRS throughout the entire program to ensure the intern absorbs the necessary training to perform independently and gains knowledge to prepare for the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification examination. The RT internship supervisor will meet with the RT intern weekly to discuss the progress and answer any questions pertaining to the training and experience.

Additional risk specific to this opportunity 

An alarm and whistle should be on the person when entering a facility containing patients. There are custody officers throughout the facility. Always inform a custody officer and/or non-custody staff when you enter a housing unit.
