Opportunity Summary 

The Seafarer Supporter is a unique learning experience that offers in-depth knowledge to the maritime industry and the plight of seafarers and how to use data, community engagement and personal support with a variety of stakeholders in building a far-reaching culture of care and advocacy for seafarers.

Opportunity Learning Outcomes 

To identify socio-cultural, economic, institutional and systemic factors that promote or hinder seafarer wellbeing and welfare To learn multiple approaches to the assessment of individual and community welfare and wellbeing. To organize and collaborate with multiple industry and community stakeholders to provide health promotion services to seafarers and their families To Identify strategies that SMGG (and other maritime welfare organizations)can use to impact program design and delivery, and health policy development and enforcement for seafarer wellbeing and welfare

Opportunity Training 

A series of online trainings related to from The Nautical Institute, World Maritime University and the UK Naval Welfare Board, and North American Maritime Ministry Association (NAMMA), plus In-person orientations and learning sessions regarding International/Interagency regulation & collaboration relating to seafarers, Psycho-social and occupational health relating to seafarers and land-based welfare relating to seafarers.

Additional risk specific to this opportunity 

Students must climb steep stairways (gangways) to board ships. To promote safety students must wear sturgy shoes with gripped soles. Extensive training is provided.
