Opportunity Summary 

The CIW Recreation Therapy Internship program is intended to provide students with an overview of the skills they need to work as a recreation therapy professional with adult female offenders in various settings, including EOP, MHCB, and PIP. Students will have the rare opportunity to obtain first-hand experience observing and participating in these mental health treatment areas inside the prison setting. Students will learn from certified Recreation Therapists who are dedicated to providing the best in patient care. Students will also be working with and learn from an Interdisciplinary Team, including Psychiatrists, Psychologists, Social Workers, nurses, and Custody Staff. Students will have weekly 1:1 supervision with a dually certified Recreation Therapist.

Opportunity Training 

Weekly Tentative Schedule

Week 1:  Confirm internship of 40 supervised hours per week and student learning goals and objectives  Orientation to facility, program and staff  Observe programs, develop rapport with staff and clients, and gather information needed for comprehensive program planning  Discuss special project/ in-service ideas and case study with supervisor (implementation of time-line will vary depending on project and unit)  Review Administrative policies and procedures o MHSDS o HIPPA o RT Manual  Review Recreation Therapy’s Relationship to Functional Impairments in Group Treatment  Review approved terminology and abbreviation list  Complete pre-internship evaluation  Review patient’s charts  Continuous weekly supervision

Week 2:  Follow– up on Orientation/Training needs and concerns  Begin developing comprehensive plan for program with therapist  Continue to observe groups and 1:1 treatment  Overview of EHRS  Orientation to Recreation Therapy documentation process, ie. assessments, weekly notes, group notes and discharge summaries  Attend unit Huddles, IDTT and other meetings  Introduction to SOMs, On Demand, Lifeline, CIW SharePoint,  Conduct initial interview/ assessment with two patients  Decide on patient for case study  Continuous weekly supervision

Week 3:  Finalize plans for 2 special projects/ inservices for review and feedback o One should be patient-related and one career-specific  Continue to develop program plans for other groups in the coming weeks as assigned  Begin contribution to patients’ treatment plan and take an increasing role in the patients’ treatment, IDTT, meetings, and documentation  Continue with additional initial interview/ assessments  Begin weekly reporting on patient’s progress in ERHS  Independently schedules work day continuing until end of internship  Continuous weekly supervision

Week 4:  Cofacilitate groups a minimum of 5 hours per week. Begin working on case study  Should have a minimum case load of 4 hours per day (4 patients)  Schedule interviews of interdisciplinary team members, including PT/ Psych/ Social Work/Custody  Continuous weekly supervision

Week 5:  Review caseload and note writing  Review groups  Identify groups that will be conducted independently  Finalize special project and begin process for implementing project  Continue to implement groups, assessments, write progress notes  Continue to work on case study  Continuous weekly supervision

Week 6:  Continue to implement recreation therapy groups, assessments, write progress notes, and participates in Huddles, IDTT meetings  Continue to work on all projects (case study, special projects, etc.).)  Midterm self–assessment, progress toward goals  Continuous weekly supervision

Week 7:  Carries a patient caseload of 4-6 patients  Continue to implement recreation therapy groups, assessments, write progress notes, and participate in Huddles, IDTT meetings  Continuous weekly supervision

Week 8:  Schedule time with a Recreation Therapist for an overview of other units and programs  Identify a specific unit to provide Recreation Therapy coverage continuously  Continue to implement recreation therapy groups, assessments, write progress notes, participate in Huddles, IDTT meetings  Continuous weekly supervision

Week 9:  Finalize case study  Continue to implement recreation therapy groups, assessments, progress notes, and participate in Huddles, IDTT meetings  Recreation Therapy coverage continues  Continuous weekly supervision

Week 10:  Overview of supply inventory, supply requestion and ordering for the primary unit. Prepare a mock order  present a case study to Recreation Therapists.  Recreation Therapy coverage continues  Continuous weekly supervision

Week 11:  Continue to work on special project/ in-service  Continue to implement recreation therapy groups, assessments, write progress notes, and participate in Huddles, IDTT meetings  Recreation Therapy coverage continues  Continuous weekly supervision

Week 12:  Continue to work on special project/ in-service  Continue to work on all requirements for primary assigned unit  Continue to implement recreation therapy groups, assessments, write progress notes, and participate in Huddles, IDTT meetings  Recreation Therapy coverage continues  Continuous weekly supervision

Week 13:  Continue to work on all requirements for the primary assigned unit  Recreation Therapy coverage continues  Continue to work on special project/ in-service  Exam preparation  Continuous weekly supervision

Week 14:  Recreation Therapy coverage continues  Continue with documentation  Exam preparation  Present special project/ in-service to Recreation Therapy staff  Continuous weekly supervision

Week 15:  Finalize documentation to Supervising Therapist  Complete Facility Student Evaluation  Mock interview  Meet with Supervising Therapist for completion of Final Student Evaluation  Complete all Exit Requirements  Participate in exit interviews with Supervising Therapist and other Recreation Therapists
