Opportunity Summary 

This opportunity within ELOP/ASES provides students and emerging professionals with meaningful, hands-on experience supporting expanded learning programs before school, after school, and during intersession and summer programming. Participants gain valuable exposure to youth development, educational enrichment, recreation, and program operations while working alongside experienced staff in a school-based setting. Individuals will support academic enrichment activities, student engagement, social-emotional learning, and recreational programming while developing transferable skills in communication, leadership, teamwork, organization, and problem-solving. This experience is especially beneficial for those interested in careers in education, child development, recreation, counseling, social services, or community-based programs. The opportunity also allows participants to build professional connections, strengthen their understanding of expanded learning environments, and contribute positively to student success and school communities. Through mentorship and real-world experience, participants gain practical knowledge and skills that support future educational and career pathways.

Opportunity Training 

Students will participate in three days of professional development training utilizing modules developed by the California School-Age Consortium. Training topics will include building a positive classroom community, incorporating older youth voices into program activities, understanding developmental trends, meeting the diverse needs of children and youth, and learning about the nine temperament traits. Participants will also receive guidance on student engagement strategies, effective communication, behavior support, professionalism, teamwork, and creating safe and inclusive learning environments. Ongoing mentorship and support will be provided by site leadership and program staff throughout the experience to ensure students feel prepared and supported in their responsibilities within the ELOP/ASES program.

Additional risk specific to this opportunity 

Safety is a priority within the ELOP/ASES program. Students will receive site-specific safety procedures, emergency protocols, and communication guidelines before beginning their responsibilities. They will have access to key site and district contacts, including Child Nutrition, Purchasing, Human Resources, and Warehouse staff for support as needed. Students will work under the supervision of experienced staff and will be issued a work cell phone and a walkie-talkie to ensure immediate communication on-site and during field trips. Regular check-ins, supervision, and review of safety expectations will help maintain a safe and supportive environment throughout the experience.
