Farm Lot 59

Organization Description

Farm Lot 59 is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in 2010 by Sasha Kanno. With the help of our founding board, local residents and the City of Long Beach the .6-acre farm was started. We are located on “historic lot number 59” in central Long Beach. Farm Lot 59 is a working organic farm, an educational center that is used to foster inspiration and exploration into food and farming.

Sasha and the community shared a vision to teach food and farming to the residents of Long Beach. They believed in the importance of knowing where your food comes from and access to fresh produce. From the very beginning we taught the importance of food production and the elimination of food miles. We pride ourselves on varietal choices picking only what grows best in our climate and passing on the knowledge of holistic farming principles. We teach farming based on organic principles to create food security through education, farmer training and cooking classes in collaboration with our local partners.

Program Information

Since 2010 Farm Lot 59 has served the community hosting 1,000's of youth in our outdoor education programming, providing an open space where people can come and learn about growing food for themselves or others. We have incubated many small businesses and inspired farmers to go rural and start bigger farms. We have helped changed policies and fought for healthy food access. We use our farm to incubate and inspire the culture of urban farming in our community through education, food accessibility, and by being a model of sustainable agriculture practices.

All students, regardless of race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, sex, gender, gender identity, and sexual orientation, are open and welcome to participate.
