Long Beach Gray Panthers

Organization Description

We are a nonprofit organization educating and advocating for the needs of senior adults and advancing progressive issues in our community.

Program Information

Projects will be tailored to provide students the best experience for their field. If students are a communication major, they may help with social media or website development. We do grass roots organizing around community issues that have an impact on older adults. We believe what is good for older adults is good for everyone. Students may help organize a protest or event or set up and attend a social justice fair or community event. We also expose students to a variety of legislative meetings so they learn how policy is developed may attend a city council meeting and speak on a specific issue. The experiences will enhance their classroom learning.

All students, regardless of race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, sex, gender, gender identity, and sexual orientation, are open and welcome to participate.

Health & Safety

We primarily work out of the 4th Street Senior Center at 1150 East 4th Street. There are few health and safety issues at the site.

Some Seniors use walkers or wheelchairs. Training will be conducted to learn how to work safely with these individuals.

No. Homeless people collect at the site and sometimes they use drugs. We work with the police department to remove them from the site and provide them with treatment options.Students will not have personal contact other than to hand seniors items - food bags, a form for them to complete or give them a gift card. Some of the seniors use walkers or wheelchairs. We ask that students who want to work directly with seniors be vaccinated and boosted with COVID vaccines.Depending upon what project they select to work on, they may have personal contact.

Students will come to the office of the Gray Panthers on the Second Floor. There is a notebook on a portable podium. They will create their own timesheet by writing their name on it. They will enter their time on the timesheet whenever they work. The supervisor will sign off on on each entry by writing their initials to the side of the entry.
