Organization Description

MATFA is a non-profit whose mission is to train and support mentors to help incarcerated individuals in our program acquire skills for successful and positive reentry into society. We're always looking for volunteers and interns to help mentor and advise at-risk youth, students, and adults. MATFA works directly inside juvenile detention centers and state prisons to serve as a positive influence and a resource to our community members behind bars. One of our long-term goals includes reducing America’s staggeringly high recidivism rate. Our short-term goals include impacting the lives of those around us with compassion and respect.

Program Information

MATFA is always looking for volunteers to help mentor and advise at risk youth, students, and adults. These volunteers will act as mentors to individuals to dissuade them from committing crimes, or help counsel them to help them avoid performing further transgressions that would result in future incarceration. Students between the ages of 18-20 will be able to work with formerly incarcerated youth. Students 21 and over will be able to work inside juvenile detention centers and mentor youth who are currently incarcerated. All students will also help with clerical work.

All students, regardless of race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, sex, gender, gender identity, and sexual orientation, are open and welcome to participate.

Health & Safety

Because there will be opportunities to work with incarcerated community members, there are risks associated with visiting prisons and juvenile detention centers. However, prior training and safety precautions are always given.
