JusticeCorps, LASC

Organization Description

JusticeCorps is an AmeriCorps program that places college students from partnering campuses in the Los Angeles Superior Court's self-help centers. Self-help centers are designed to educate people who represent themselves in court without attorney counsel. Our AmeriCorps members explain court processes, educate members of the public regarding legal options, they assist litigants with the completion of court forms, and our participants provide language assistance to court users with limited English proficiency.

Program Information

All students, regardless of race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, sex, gender, gender identity, and sexual orientation, are open and welcome to participate.

Health & Safety

We provide inclusion training that focuses on the diverse populations who we support at the court. We specifically host a training on disability. We do not specifically host training directed at serving the elderly, but our disability training includes appropriate actions for folks who are hard of hearing, visually impaired, and folks who may need support due to cognitive challenges. We provide support to all members of our community, not specifically the elderly.

The court is compliant with all county, state, and federal safety requirements.

It's hard to say how many people our supervisors support during any one shift, but it is usually around 5 people. We have a very strong supervision support system for our students. Each student is assigned to one workshop and an attorney is assigned to supervise all the students working in that workshop. Nothing our participants do is unsuperivsed.
